How do I become an Ethos agent?

Selling policies through Ethos is a digital-first process designed for speed. Whether you are an independent producer or part of an Insurance Marketing Organization (IMO), the platform integrates with multiple carrier partners to help you start selling quickly.

It is important to note that Ethos agents are independent partners, not employees or affiliates of Ethos itself. By joining the platform, you are essentially licensing Ethos’s proprietary technology and portal to facilitate sales.

The Onboarding Process

1. Register via the Correct Path

  • Independent Agents: Visit the Ethos for Agents page and click "Get Started" to create an account using your basic contact information and NPN (National Producer Number).

  • IMO-Affiliated Agents: Do not sign up via the public website. You must request a specific contracting link directly from your IMO or agency. Using this link ensures your production is correctly credited to your hierarchy and aligns with your agency's commission structure.

2. Verify Your Credentials

To activate your account, you must meet these primary requirements:

  • Valid Life Insurance License: You must have an active license in at least one state where you plan to sell.
  • E&O Insurance: You need active Errors and Omissions coverage, typically with a $1M minimum.
  • Tax & Payment Info: You must provide a W-9 and your banking details for direct deposit of commissions.

3. Instant or Fast-Track Appointment

  • Digital Appointment: The platform digitally facilitates appointments by guiding you through completing carrier contracting/appointment requirements for carrier partners like Banner Life Insurance Company, TruStage®, Ameritas, or North American.
  • Timeline: While some independent agents can begin quoting the same day, IMO-linked appointments typically take 7-15 business days for full approval and verification. If carriers ask agents to provide additional information, this timeline may be longer.
  • If agents are ultimately not approved, access to products through those carrier(s) will be removed from their Agent Portal.

What You Get Once You’re Active

Once your account is live, you gain access to the Agent Portal, which includes:

  • Personalized/Co-branded Link: A unique URL and QR code to share with clients. If clients who reside in state(s) you’re licensed in buy through this link, you are automatically the agent of record (AOR).
  • Agent-Assisted App: A tool to fill out applications with the client over the phone or in person.
  • Marketing Toolkit: Access to a playbook, pre-approved social media assets, and email templates.
  • Real-Time Tracking: A dashboard to monitor exactly where your clients are in the underwriting process.

Key Considerations

  • Independence vs. Hierarchy: You can join as a solo independent agent, but if you are already with an IMO, using their link is vital for proper reporting.
  • No Cost: There is generally no fee to join the Ethos platform as an agent.
  • State Availability: Policies sold through Ethos are currently available in 49 states (not available in New York).
